How To Prepare For My Bridal Preview Session

What Should I Bring With Me?

  • Come prepared to your trial with photos, or even your Pinterest board, of hair and makeup inspiration that you’d like to use. We often ask our brides to bring photos of looks that they like, and also of what they don’t like so that we know what they may be envisioning, and to establish clear lines of communication. If you do not bring photos, and are super specific, please be aware that you may still leave disappointed if you cannot describe what you want in professional hair and makeup. Pictures save a lot of time and stress.
  • Please bring along photos of your wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses, so that we can get a feel for the style of the bridal party.
  • For all hair previews, we ask that you bring along your veil, tiara, flower, or head piece so that it can be worked into your hairstyle. If you plan on wearing fresh flowers in your hair, please let me know at the Preview.
  • If you’d like, feel free to bring along your jewelry, too.
  • Lastly, if we haven’t already received them via email prior to the preview, please bring along photos of each person receiving a hair and/or makeup service on your wedding day.

How Should I Arrive To My Preview?

  • On the day of your preview, please arrive with clean, makeup free skin if possible. If you need to take off your makeup when you arrive, we have cleansers, wipes, and makeup remover at the studio.
  • Try to wear a white (or ivory) shirt with a neckline similar to that of your dress. If that’s not an option, though, no worries.
  • If you are having a hair preview, please arrive with your hair clean, dry and product free. It is best if you wash your hair at least 1 day prior to your preview.
  • Please be advised that if, unless specified by your artist, your artist has to blow dry your hair prior to styling, there will be an additional fee of $35.

How Long Should I Expect My Preview To Take?

  • For a hair and makeup preview, you should expect to be in the studio for 3 hours.
  • For either hair or makeup, you should expect to be in the studio for 1.5 hours.
  • Each preview begins with a consultation where we look over all of the materials that you’ve brought with you (such as your inspiration), discuss skin care concerns and needs, determine the best makeup application, and a full hair and/or makeup styling session.
  • We will also take before and after photos for reference, and create a makeup face chart for all makeup previews.

Tips For A Successful Preview Session

1. The Bridal Preview is a very important part of the Bridal Beauty Experience, and makes the wedding day experience easier for both parties. You don’t want to find out on the day of the wedding that the foundation that we use makes your face itchy, or that wearing false lashes bothers your eyes. It is always best to have a preview of what you can expect to look and feel like on your wedding day, prior to the actual date. The Preview is your chance to determine colors, how natural or dramatic you’d like to look, and also your chance to get to know the artist who will be working with you on your day. This is also a great opportunity to see how your makeup will last throughout the course of the day. Bridal Previews are not required, however they are highly recommended to every bride.

2. Bring only those to the appointment who are critical to your bridal beauty process. When it comes to your hair and makeup, too many opinions may be a bad thing. It is important that when determining your wedding hair and makeup look, you feel your most confident and are fully happy with the look that is decided upon. We understand the need to have a second opinion from a trusted friend or family member, but encourage you to only bring those individuals that you trust most to let your voice be heard. Our goal is to ensure that your experience is positive, productive, and happy. So, while we graciously welcome and love having guest in our studio, we advise you to carefully consider who will be coming along.

3. Keep an open mind. If you are not used to wearing makeup on a daily basis, bridal makeup may initially be a little shocking. Bridal makeup artistry is generally a little heavier than makeup for daily wear. The colors may appear more pigmented than usual, and things may look a little more dramatic. The artistry behind bridal makeup is to do enough for the bride to look amazing in both photography, as well as in person. Additionally, hair styles may require a little extra volume in order to photograph its best, and to have staying power through a long day. Please remember that we are professional artists, and understand all of your concerns, and we also know how to make you look your best, both in person and on camera.

4. Be honest with your artist. Once your look is completed at your preview, its important to give your artist all of your honest feedback. Remember, your wedding day will probably be the most photographed day of your life, and you want to look back at your photos and love the way you looked. Be sure to discuss any changes that you’d like to make to the look with your artist during your preview

5. Make a day of it. Try to schedule your preview during the day time. By doing so, you can wear your hair and/or makeup look to see how it will hold up throughout the day. This will also give you time to be sure that you love everything about the look that was created during your preview, or to even get other opinions if you need. Its also a great idea to schedule your preview on the day of your dress fitting so that you can get the full effect of how you will look on your wedding day!

6. Schedule your Preview on a weekday. Due to the high volume of wedding that we do at M.A.W.Beauty Hair & Makeup Studio, we accept Preview appointments Monday – Thursday by appointment only.

7. Enjoy the experience. Its not everyday that you get to have a personal hair and makeup artist! Your bridal beauty experience should not be stressful, and should probably be one of the most enjoyable aspects of your wedding experience! We are here to help you relax, get pampered, and look your absolute best.

Bridal Preview FAQs

~When should I schedule my Preview?

Many brides like to schedule their previews closer to the actual wedding date. Generally, we say 1- 3 months prior to the wedding is a good time to schedule the Preview, as your hair will be closer to the length it will be on the wedding date, and your skin should be roughly the same tone as it will be for the wedding. It is perfectly fine, however, if you’d like to schedule your Preview sooner than that.

~If I already know what I want, why do I need to have a Preview?

The preview is probably the most important aspect of the Bridal Beauty Experience. This is your one-on-one time with the Artist who will be working with you on the day of your wedding. During your preview, you will be able to ask questions and address concerns. Additionally, the preview will help determine if any additional preparations, such as extensions or hair paddings, will be required to achieve the style that you are hoping to wear on your wedding day. Your Preview will help to establish clear lines of communication, and solidify your look (a smoky eye to you may be totally different to your Artist…your Preview is the time to discuss this, not your wedding day).

~What if I think I need a second Preview? Do you charge extra for that?

We allow 1.5 hours for previews of hair or makeup only, and 3 hours for previews where hair and makeup will be styled. If you are not sure of what you want, don’t schedule your Preview yet. Look through magazines, online, and on Pinterest to get a better idea. Once you have a clearer idea on how you’d like your hair and/or makeup styled, then, feel free to book your Preview. Second Previews are not free or discounted, and will be charged at our regular rate.

~I only want my hair done (or just my makeup) because my friend/stylist is going to do the other service – is this okay?

Although we will style just hair or just makeup, it is preferred to have us style both. When you use the same person or company for both services, you are guaranteed one cohesive, harmonious style for your hair and makeup. If this other person does not do this on a regular basis (like we do), then their time management skills may differ from how your M.A.W.Beauty Artist works. If you do prefer to have M.A.W.Beauty provide only hair or makeup, please let us know who will be providing the other service so that we can collaborate on the style and timing. The most important thing is for you, the bride, to feel at ease all day and not have to worry if two stylists can work well together.

~I am planning on changing dresses before the reception. Can I also change my hair or enhance my makeup so that everything flows?

Absolutely! This has become super popular in recent years. If you are using M.A.W.Beauty Bridal Beauty Services on an A La Carte basis, then a “Hair and Makeup Change”, or hourly fee would be charged. If you have chosen a Day Rate option, this service is included and would not incur an additional charge.

~My mother/mother-in-law/bridesmaid’s day-to-day look is a bit dated, and I’m afraid that if they insist on doing their own hair and makeup, it will take away from the look that I envision. I want to include them, but how can I do this without hurting their feelings?

This is a sticky subject, but at the end of the day, everyone should look polished for YOUR WEDDING. The best solution may be for you to “treat” these individuals to their beauty services on the day of the wedding, and to stress how important it is that everyone’s look goes together, and that your bridal party’s look is cohesive. Let them know that their Artist will absolutely listen to their needs and concerns, and work with them to create a look that they are comfortable and confident with.

~I have big eyes/small eyes/flat eyelids/double eyelids – can you work with me?

We have worked with hundreds of faces and are confident that we can shape any eye into your desired look.

~I am getting married in Florida/Punta Cana/Mexico/Puerto Rico – do you travel with me?

Destination weddings can be an incredibly beautiful experience, but preparations can be stressful (and scary!) if you aren’t familiar with local stylists. If going overseas is in your future, it may be hard to get a Preview or trial run before the day of your wedding, and who knows if a local stylist will be able to achieve your dream look. M.A.W.Beauty Artists do travel all over the world to do hair, makeup and personal styling for brides-to-be. Pricing for destination weddings is different than a local wedding. Please inquire for a custom quote.

~I haven’t reserved my date yet. If I love my hair and/or makeup after the Preview, how do I reserve my date?

If you are confident in our ability to achieve your dream wedding day look, then we’d love to work with you! To reserve your date, we require a $300 non-refundable retainer in the form of cash or credit card, as well as a completed and signed contract. If you are unsure whether or not members of your party will be needing services, it is recommended that you only book services for yourself. A simple service agreement will be drawn up and emailed to you for approval. Once your service agreement and retainer are both returned, your date will be considered booked.

No date is secure without both of these items.

**All weddings are booked on a first come, first booked basis. The first bride to offer her retainer and signed agreement will get the date requested. We will continue to take Previews for a given date until it is secured with both a retainer and contract.

**The cost for your Preview is non-refundable, and does not go towards the final cost for wedding day services.

**If you must reschedule your preview, or the date/time no longer works for you, please contact us immediately at 401.678.0179.
